“Find the best balance in packaging design.” Sissi, a staff member of Nestle In China, said in an interview:
We believe that packaging's "visual enjoyment and emotional satisfaction" does not conflict with "environmental sustainability". Consumers' cognition of sustainable development is constantly improving, and they want to buy products with higher quality, more beautiful and more environmentally friendly packaging. These factors combine to promote the sustainable development of packaging industry.
3.If recycling is not active, no label is meaningless
According to a recent study published in February by environmental group Zero Waste Europe, PET recycling in the European Union is around 50%, but only 17% of that is made into new bottles, with the rest "degraded and recycled" into lower-quality products such as plastic pallets, textile fibres, films and strapping straps.
One reason is that the production cost of recycled PET is not low and the quality is not stable, but the food-grade plastic requirements are high. "Bottle to bottle" is high value utilization, "bottle to chemical fiber" is mainly low value utilization.
This means that we need to increase the recovery rate and quality of PET.
The popular bottle of the future will still be the PET bottle of today. But we need to collect it, recycle it, and recycle it again. That's the future.
4.Sustainably purchased materials
One law to be amended in 2022 is the packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. This should bring it into line with the EU executive's goal that all packaging on the EU market can be reused or recycled in an economically viable manner by 2030.
"The European Commission said that all packaging should be recyclable or reusable by 2030. We believe this is incomplete to some extent. We believe that packaging should be sustainable, low-carbon, recyclable and / or reusable by 2030."
This is a challenge for the beverage carton industry, whose products depend on primary fiber due to its composition and strict laws on food contact materials.
"Some of these commitments sound challenging in terms of delivery. For example, the industry's commitment to use more fiber and less plastic will put more pressure on raw fiber resources; on the other hand, the industry is also committed to enhancing biodiversity and promoting forest growth. The two commitments sound contradictory."
5.Overcoming recycling challenges
The upcoming packaging law of the European Commission will point out that it is necessary to design products in line with the principle of circular economy. According to industry insiders said, the recovery rate of beverage cartons was 51% in 2019, but this proportion may decline with the introduction of the EU method to measure the recovery rate more accurately. It is said that the actual recovery rate is actually lower than this.
Due to the composition of materials and structures such as cartons, it is difficult to be completely recycled. Their outer layers are mostly made of wood fiber, but the inner layers also contain plastic and aluminum to ensure the drink's safety and longer storage. They are glued together, making them difficult to separate for recycling and processing. However, the industry is beginning to invest in recycling aluminum and plastic in cartons in Europe .
It is also difficult to cut down on primary plastics, because the market for recycled plastics is not developed enough, which means that there is insufficient supply and the price is not competitive compared with primary materials. EU executives need to solve this issue by introducing a recycling content target for plastics in the packaging and Packaging Waste Directive to be revised.
All materials do not need to be forcibly recycled. Taking fiber as an example, about 80% of the packaging materials made of fiber are recycled, and these recycled fibers enter new products. Recycling value chains are working.
