The global paper packaging industry is experiencing robust growth and transformative changes in 2025, driven by sustainability demands and market consolidation. International Paper and DS Smith completed a landmark merger in January, creating a global leader employing 65,000 staff across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the companies announced this month.

Quality assurance remains a priority in key markets. China's Linyi Municipal Administration for Market Regulation recently released results of its second 2025 quality inspection of food-contact paper packaging, covering 25 batches across production and sales channels. All samples passed rigorous tests for contaminants like lead, arsenic and fluorescent substances, as well as microbial safety, adhering to national standards including GB 4806.8-2022. The regulator advised consumers to check for production licenses and avoid overly bleached or heavily printed products.

Sustainability commitments are deepening. Detpak, part of Detmold Group, launched 2025-2050 sustainability goals focusing on climate action, nature protection, circularity and governance. "These goals position us as an innovative global partner for sustainable packaging," said CEO Sascha Detmold Cox. Meanwhile, China's Bohui Paper introduced water-based barrier food cardboard EPP this year, replacing traditional PE coating to enable recyclability and microwave compatibility.

Industry innovation will be showcased at upcoming events, including China Print 2025 in Beijing this May and South China's printing and label exhibition in March, highlighting the sector's technical evolution.
